Opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye has reportedly been arrested and taken to Naggalama Police Station in Mukono District where he is being detained.
Besigye is said to have been arrested on Sunday morning as he tried to leave his home in Kasangati in Wakiso District.
He was reportedly bundled on a waiting police van and whisked away.
The former Forum for Democratic Change presidential candidate was arrested as he set out to attend a scheduled parallel Independence Day celebrations that they were supposed to hold in Katwe, a Kampala suburb.
Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago was also cornered by police as he left his home in Wakaligga, Rubaga division and detained at Kira road police station.
Also arrested was Makindye West Member of Parliament (MP) Allan Ssewanyana who was trying to leave his home and rushed to Kibuye police station.
Efforts to get a comment from police spokesperson Andrew Keweesi or Kampala metropolitan police spokesperson Emillian Kayima failed.
However, government had earlier warned opposition members against holding parallel Independence Day celebrations.
Police has also cordoned off the venue where FDC independence activities were supposed to take place.
