The Prime Minister Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda has met with two former FC Barcelona legends Patrick Kluivert and Rayco Garcia who briefed him about their plans to construct an International football academy in Uganda.
The academy is expected to be constructed in partnership with UNICEF.
The two football legends informed the Prime Minister that the establishment of the football academy in Uganda will help at least 15 talented kids to join big leagues like La Liga and the Premier, in the next 10 years.
It was noted that Uganda has a young population which was highly talented in areas like football.
Such young talents must be nurtured to produce professional footballers to improve their welfare.
Prime Minister welcomed the two football legends and thanked them for choosing Uganda as one of the destinations to establish a high profile football academy.
He said Government was ready to provide land for the sports academy to be constructed.
“Soccer talent was all over the country. Government will certainly offer support towards promotion of football to facilitate a better livelihood among the youth,” the premier said.
The Premier was informed about plans to host FC Barcelona legends playing a friendly match with the Uganda Cranes team in Namboole stadium.
They were pleased to bring such an event to Uganda where football was undoubtedly the number one sport.
“I know that Ugandans love football and such a match would promote the country’s tourism potential,” Garcia said.
A similar tournament was organized in Tanzania where FC Barcelona legends played with the Tanzanian National team.
Tanzania has since become one of the prominent tourist destinations in East Africa.
The visit of the two football legends was a big milestone in as far as marketing Uganda is concerned.
