Opposition leader Kizza Besigye has paid a tribute to former chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) Aziz Kalungi Kasujja.
Kasujja passed on Sunday evening at Platinum Hospital in Wandegeya.
According to his son, Yunus Kasujja, the former EC boss was attending a meeting at Broadway Primary School in Kawempe when he complained of heart problems.
He was rushed to the hospital but later succumbed to heart failure.
Aziz has ever been hospitalised at Mulago Heart Institute due to a heart complication.
“Farewell HAJJ AZIZ KASUJJA. Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un,” Besigye said in a tweet.
He added: “Hajj Aziz was a decent man & did his best in 2001.”
Kasujja’s body has been taken to Kibuli Mosque for prayers.
Prayers are being led by Sheikh Kyazze Muhammad from Kansanga.
It will then be transported to Mbulire in Bukomansimbi district for burial later in the day.
Kasujja served as Electoral Commission chairperson between 1997 and 2002 when he retired.
Kasujja was the EC chairperson during the 2001 general election when Dr Kizza Besigye run against President Museveni for the first time.
He retired in 2002 and was appointed Kasujja as Uganda’s Ambassador to Saudi Arabia where he served until 2011 when he retired.
