Austria concert shooting: gunman kills, wounds 11

Two people have been killed and 11 others injured after a 27-year-old man opened fire at a rock concert in Austria before turning the gun on himself.

The suspect is said to have argued with a woman at the open air gig in Nenzing at around 3am local time on Saturday before going to his car to fetch a gun.

The gunman fired – apparently at random – into a crowd of around 150 people at the concert, which was organised by a motorcycle club. He then returned to the car, where he shot himself.

Local media said the weapon appeared to be some kind of rifle.

A police spokesman said the injuries sustained by those in the crowd are ‘very diverse’ and several are believed to be in a critical condition.

Florian Kasseroler, the mayor of Nenzing, said the concert had been running for ten years and until now had never seen any trouble.

Norbert Hofer, Austria’s far-right presidential candidate,  was quoted on Sunday as saying that the gunman was “crazy.”

Police are continuing to investigate the scene and say they have no other details at this stage.

Nenzing is about 40 kilometres east of the border with Liechtenstein.
