Somali National Army [SNA] and African Union troops [AMISOM] have killed six Al Shabaab insurgents and defended a military base.
Al-Shabab insurgents attacked a Somali military base on Tuesday and killed five soldiers in two hours of fierce fighting near the northwestern town of Baidoa.
Captain Aden Nur told Reuters that other 12 soldiers were wounded.
He also said the national forces managed to kill six Al Shabaab fighters.
“SNA and AMISOM troops have this morning foiled an Al Shabaab attempt to attack their positions and FGS Institutions in Janalle, Lower Shabelle,” Amisom said in a short statement.
The mission said heavy casualties were inflicted on the enemy.
“AMISOM remains resolute in the effort to fight &defeat the enemies of peace in Somalia.”
Abdiasis Abu Musab, the Shebab military operations spokesman, said it had ambushed a truck carrying troops to reinforce the base, killed 11 soldiers and seized seven guns.
Al-Shabab, which has links to al-Qaida was behind an attack in January on a base for Kenyan troops working with an African Union peacekeeping mission in Somalia.
