African Union Mission in Somalia [AMISOM] says it has killed atleast 110 Al Shabaab fighters in attack on an Ethiopian army base.
Somali Islamist militants on Thursday said they had killed 43 soldiers in an attack on a base of Ethiopian troops serving with the African Union’s AMISOM force in the Horn of Africa nation.
“We killed 43 AU soldiers from Ethiopia in the fighting,” al Shabaab’s military operations spokesman Sheikh Abdiasis Abu Musab told Reuters, adding “several” of its fighters had also been killed without giving a figure.
Amisom later released its own statement denying the exaggerated number of causalities.
“We can confirm there was an attempted Al Shabaab attack on the AMISOM/SNA base in Halgan Somalia. The enemy was successfully repulsed,” Amisom said.
AMISOM troops and Somali National Army jointly drove back the attackers who are now on the run with the joint forces in pursuit.
An assortment of weapons was captured as the joint forces overpowered the attackers.
“Al Shabaab incurred heavy casualties in the attempted attack in Halgan. 110 Al Shabaab fighters were killed including one white foreign fighter,” the statement said.
The mission claimed capture of a large cache of weapons and regaining control of the area.
