AU bid: Kazibwe woos Liberia’s Sirleaf, Ghana’s Mahama

Former Uganda vice president Dr. Speciosa Wandira-Kazibwe spent last week in West Africa soliciting for support chairperson of the African Union Commission.

On Wednesday, June 29, she met with the President of Ghana, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, at flagstaff House in the capital Accra.

“We discussed the upcoming African Union Summit in Kigali and my candidature for Chairperson of the African Union,” she said after the meeting.

Dr Kazibwe, the Eastern Africa candidate for Chairperson of African Union Commission, also delivered President Museveni’s message to President Mahama.


She also held talks with Liberia’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Marjon Kamara, in Monrovia.

On Friday July 1, Dr Kazibwe held talks with Liberia’s President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf in the capital Monrovia.

The two deliberated on multiple issues of interest to the struggle for a better Africa that inform Uganda’s bid for Chairperson of the African Union Commission.

She further held a meeting with Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, my sister Hannah Tetteh.

“We discussed election of Members of the African Union Commission.”

On Sunday evening, she arrived in the Chadian capital N’Djamena hold talks with President Idriss Déby on her bid.

Ms Sarah Kagingo, the head of communications on Kazibwe’s campaign team, says after meeting Déby, the current Chairperson of the African Union [AU], the candidate will then head to Gabon.

President Yoweri Museveni has already dispatched special envoys including; Deputy Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Jacob Oulanyah, the minister of International Relations Hon Okello Henry Oryem, Maj Gen Kahinda Otafiire, Hon Cecilia Ogwal Atim, Hon Syda Bbumba, Hon James Baba, Hon J. Omach, Hon Victoria Sekitoleko, Daudi Migereko, to canvass votes for the Eastern Africa candidate.

The team will meet with Presidents of the respective African countries and lobby support for the Eastern African candidate to the chairperson of African Union Commission, an office currently occupied by the South African envoy, Nkosazana Clarice Dlamini-Zuma.

The new Chairperson of the African Union Commission will be elected at the July 10 – 18 27th African Union Summit to be held in the Rwandan, capital Kigali.

As in previous years, the 54 member nations of the African Union will convene with the aim to boost development, eradicate poverty, bring Africa further into the global economy under the theme: “African Year of Human Rights with particular focus on the Rights of Women”.

Dr Kazibwe has already secured bloc support from 14 countries.
