Police in Arua have beefed up the district Imam’s security after he narrowly escaped an assassination attempt.
According to NTV, Sheikh Rashid Hamis Ismail, the Imam of Arua Mosque, noticed a stranger with a gun advancing towards him.
He made an alarm which awakened neighbours before the assassin fled.
“Suddenly somebody just emerged from behind. He was putting on a gown and carrying a gun on his back, Ismail told NTV.
He said when the assassin saw him, he started removing the gun from his back.
“I made an alarm after seeing his gun. My brothers and neighbors came out and then I tried to run but fell down twice and even got bruises.”
When the assassin heard people opening doors, he run off.
Police has started investigations and has given two guards to the Imam for protection.
Armed gunmen have made it a point to eliminate all Muslim leaders in the country with majority falling in Kampala and Eastern Uganda.
The killings are mostly blamed on ADF rebels although their leader, Jamil Mukulu, is currently in prison.
