Army spokesperson Lt Col Paddy Ankunda says UPDF is still gathering evidence to pin Nakawa Division MP Michael Kabaziguruka and his accomplices who were plotting to overthrow government.
Kabaziguruka and 19 Uganda People’s Defence Forces [UPDF] soldiers, one policemen and three civilians were Tuesday remanded to Makindye military prison and Kigo prisons respectively.
They were produced in Makindye General Court Martial presided over by the new chairman Lt Gen Andrew Gutti and charged with offences relating to security and treachery.
The legislator together with the three others challenged their trial in Military court arguing that they could not take plea because court has no jurisdiction.
They were first arrested at the start of June for plotting to overthrow the government alongside 30 soldiers.
Lt Gen Gutti remanded the group until July 12, 2016.
Speaking on the matter, Ankunda said there was some evidence linking Kabaziguruka to offences related to security and treachery, all triable under the UPDF Act.
“We have an enabling law to try cases of that nature. The honorable is being charged of aiding and abetting the soldiers,” Ankunda told NTV.
“Investigations are going on to have credible evidence. At the moment prosecution has decided on that charges.”
