Army, police recover guns in shootout


UPDF in joint operation with other security agencies recovered six guns and 116 bullets from a criminal gang operating in Mt Elgon area.

The gang has been under the command of Julius Chelimo, a UPDF deserted who surrendered on March 29, at Bugema Army Barracks.

The UPDF 3rd Division spokesperson, Capt Isaac Oware, told journalsits the guns were recovered from 13 suspects who were operating under the command of Chelimo.

Kapchorwa Resident District Commissioner Jane Frances Kuka says the joint security team has doubled its efforts to ensure that the criminal gangs surrender peacefully.

President Yoweri Museveni in March visited the Sebei region and asked the gunmen to surrender peacefully or be killed.

Following the appeal, Chelimo, Claver Chesakit, Latif Chelogoi, Geoffrey Babu, Tony Mataf, Noah Kitlimo Bosco Siwa, Nelson Chelangat, Martin Chesanga, Timothy Chebet, Joshua Sukuku, Martin Bushendich and Leonard Chemonges, all surrendered to security forces.

In related news, Uganda police on Saturday killed six thugs and recovered three guns in Kampala district.

Police spokesperson Fred Enanga, told media on Monday that the Flying Squad waylaid the group in Busabala and shot them dead.
