The Uganda electoral commission has officially denied ownership of a truck that was seen covered with President Yoweri Museveni’s banners on social media.
Addressing press this afternoon at EC offices along Jinja road, Chairman Badru Kiggundu said the truck No. UAK 510E belongs to M/S eclipse marketing managed by Dr Mich Egwang.
The truck is decorated with posters of one the presidential candidates [Museveni] and carrying likely supporters of the same candidate.
Kiggundu says when the images of the same truck started circulating on social media, the commission immediately launched an investigation.
“There is a misrepresentation of EC as a partisan body,” Kiggundu regretted.
Kiggundu explained that Dr Mich [owner] rented out the truck to Strategic Friends International one of the firms contracted by the EC to conduct voter education in northern Uganda.
“After the launch, the same truck was hired by the owner to other users who have no connection to EC.”
He said the development created a wrong impression about EC making it look like the commission was promoting Museveni.
Kiggundu has thus directed Strategic Friends International to remove the said logos to avoid confusion among the public.
Kiggundu further noted that the logo and name which are portrayed in the pictures are not official identity of EC.
“EC would like to allay the concerns of the general public and assure them that EC is not promoting any candidate.”
He added: “EC is committed to ensuring that campaigns are conducted in a fair and transparent manner.”
Meanwhile, Dr Mich who was also present at EC offices apologised for the damage caused.
