The chairperson of the Citizens Election Observers Network- Uganda (CEON-U) Dr Livingstone Ssewanyana has demanded that National Resistance Movement (NRM) secretary general Ms Justine Kasule Lumumba apologise for remarks made while presiding over party campaigns in Wakiso.
Ms Lumumba while presiding over the launch of NRM campaigns in Wakiso District headquarters is quoted to have warned: “When President Museveni, the chief fighter, is still seated on the throne, whatever they are planning, tell them the government of NRM is not going anywhere! Don’t send your children to bring chaos in Kampala and confusion during elections, disrupt peace in the country, government will handle you…. you will be shot.”
Lumumba is also said to have reiterated that: The state will kill your children if they come to disorganise and distablise the peace and security in Kampala and Wakiso.” Words that Mr Ssewanyana says must be retracted with an apology.
Mr Ssewanyana was speaking at the release of the 4th election report by the CEON-U in Ggaba, Kampala. The report indicates that NRM posters were the most defaced between November and January at 26 to 30% mainly in Bukedi, Buganda, Bunyoro and Kigezi while ethnicity ranked highest as a basis for hate speech, intimidation and violence against candidates.
