Army spokesperson, Lt Col Paddy Ankunda, says the massive deployment of UPDF soldiers on the streets of Kampala is not meant to harm or scare people.
The military deployed to quell unrest that was sparked by the arrest of FDC candidate, Kizza Besigye, for allegedly trying to announce his results from the Thursday elections.
The electoral commission condemned the act as illegal.
“Only Uganda electoral commission has the mandate to announce official and final results of both presidential and parliamentary candidates,” Ankunda said, adding his voice to that of EC boss, Badru Kiggundu.
Ankunda says the presence of troops on streets and everywhere in Uganda is meant to ensure total peace and security.
He says it is also for the protection of people and their properties.
