The State Minister for Youth and Children Affairs, Evelyn Anite, says Amama Mbabazi has Friday endorsed President Yoweri Museveni as sole candidate.
This comes after Mbabazi told press at his Kololo home that he would not seek the presidency on NRM ticket but as an independent.
“It’s good because he is not going against our party decision which he had agreed to,” Anite started excitedly.
Mbabazi was also expected to pick nomination forms from Kyadondo to contest against Museveni as NRM party chairman and presidential flag bearer.
He instead announced the opposite much to the benefit of the party chairman who is expected to pick his forms anytime today.
Anite says by not running on the NRM ticket, today Amama Mbabazi has “endorsed” the “sole candidature” of President Museveni.
Together with David Bahati, then Deputy Government Chief Whip, Anite led a parliamentary Caucus at Kyankwanzi in 2014 to endorse Museveni as their sole candidate in 2016 elections.
The youthful MP went on her knees and begged the president to accept her suggestion.
The resolution was signed by over 200 members of Parliament all endorsing a proposal to stretch Museveni’s reign beyond 2016.
Mbabazi who signed last later said sole candidature were just opinions of the NRM caucus.
Later, the Caucus approved the allocation of 1.4 billion thus 4 million shillings for each sub county to popularize the sole candidature project.
Only recently, Anite told a gathering of youth in Kampala that Mbabazi needed to be pushed out of the party since he has already portrayed that he no longer follows the party principles.
“Mbabazi has staged a new logo of a crested crane and a slogan of ‘Go forward’ which are different from the party logo and slogan; this is a clear indication that he must be left to ‘go forward’ and out of the party,” she is quoted as saying.
She accused Mbabazi of copying the NRM ten-point programme by trimming it to the eight ten program but with similar agenda.
In last week’s CEC sub-committee meeting, Mbabazi refused to apologise to Museveni, narrowing his chances in NRM.
