At least four police officers are reported and nine others wounded in attack on the traffic police headquarters in Mogadishu.
A massive explosion followed by heavy gunfire was heard in Mogadishu’s Abdi Azizi district moments ago.
The militants used a car bomb to target traffic police head offices after which the gunmen stormed it and engaged cops in a fierce fight.
Somali said traffic police officer Mohamed Nur confirmed two officers had died and three others injured.
Nur said police also shot dead an armed militant who wanted to storm the building.
Al Shabaab militant group claimed responsibility.
Abdiasis Abu Musab, al Shabaab’s military operations spokesman, said they killed nine policemen and lost two of their fighters.
This comes after secuccessfully operations by African Union troops on the militants.
On 30 April 2016, the joint forces liberated Run-nirgood village in Middle Shabelle.
The village was used as a base to launch attacks by Al Shabaab.
In another offensive on 28 April 2016, AMISOM and Somali National Army troops liberated Galcad and Bud bud villages from Al Shabaab.
On 22 April, AMISOM and SNA attacked Al Shabaab bases in Elqoohle and Bud bud villages in Eel bur district of Galgaduud region, killing 25 militants.
AMISOM and SNA have registered huge successes against Al Shabaab in Hiiraan, Galgaduud and Middle Shabelle regions in past two weeks.
