The Anti-Corruption Coalition Uganda-ACCU in partnership with Civil Society Organizations has started collecting signatures to petition the speaker over none performing Members of Parliament.
ACCU wants all legislators who have been dodging parliamentary work without notifying the office of the speaker kicked out of the house.
The move follows a recent report on the performance of legislators, which showed that more than more than half of the 386 MPs in the 9th Parliament have not represented their electorate efficiently or made meaningful contribution on the floor of Parliament.
The report also showed that 50 of the 200 MPs with questionable performance either sat in Parliament for six months without uttering a word or they absconded from parliamentary work without the Speaker’s written permission.
Kick Corruption out of Kigezi is one of the CSOs that have teamed up with Anti Corruption Coalition Uganda to collect signatures to petition the speaker of parliament to kick out the non performing legislators.
Reverend Fr. Gaetano Batanyenda, the chairperson Kick Corruption out of Kigezi says they are targeting to collect at least 5000 signatures from Voters from each of region in the country.
Fr Gaetano says it is unfortunate that a big number of legislators in the 9th Parliament have let down their Constituents adding that, it is high time the speaker uses the law to deal with them.
Rodgers Masiko, a resident of Nyabikoni in Central Division in Kabale Municipality is one of those that have appended their signatures on the petition.
Masiko says that he is disappointed with the performance of some of the legislators in the house.
Article 83(1) of the constitution of Uganda states that, a member of parliament must vacate his seat, if he or she is absent from fifteen sittings of Parliament without permission in writing of the Speaker during any period when the Parliament is Continuously meeting and is unable to offer satisfactory explanation to the relevant parliamentary committee for his or her absence.
