200 arrested in Kasese army operation

Over 200 people have been rounded up in an operation dubbed “Operation Usalama” and mounted by UPDF soldiers.

The operation kicked off at 2am by both soldiers and police recovering “Kirumira Mutima” documents and machetes.

Out of the 200 people rounded up in Kasese, 100 were detained following a thorough screening.

Unknown militias have been attacking locals and security officials, hacking them to death in Kasese and Bundibugyo districts.

Security forces have been seen patrolling a number of restive areas but situation is mostly calm.

Some people, especially in trading centers, are returning back home.

Others remain in camps where security is heightened.

President Yoweri Museveni ordered the army to deploy in Rwenzori so as to restore peace and security.

On Monday, the president met Bakonzo and Bamba cultural leaders; Omusinga of Rwenzururu, Charles Wesley Mumbere and Lt. Col. John Kamya (Omudingya) at Mweya Safari Lodge.

This meeting is significant as government engages all key stakeholders to ensure a permanent solution is found to the political/economic issues affecting the Rwenzori sub-region.
