Moroto regional Referral Hospital is stuck with over 15 unclaimed dead bodies that are rotting in the hospital mortuary.
The bodies, mainly for elderly persons and babies have started producing foul stench forcing restaurants and businesses in the hospital neighbourhood to suspend business.
According to the hospital management, there are bodies that have stayed in the mortuary for about five months now.
The hospital director, Dr. Philbert Nyeko, said it was the Municipal authority’s responsibility to bury unclaimed bodies.
“We are not comfortable about the bodies rotting in the hospital and the challenge is that as hospital we do not have a burial ground where we could take these unclaimed bodies to bury them. It’s the municipal council to take that responsibility,” he said.
The assistant town clerk Moroto Municipality, Moses Lorika, however, blamed the hospital administration for delaying to update the council in time.
“It’s the fault of our colleagues in the hospital to inform us early. We have got the information and we are mobilising fuel to collect those bodies for burial,” he said.
