Ten vendors from Hoima market died and four others sustained injuries after a road accident at Kyenjojo village along the Kaiso-Tonya road on Tuesday night.
Hoima district Traffic Officer Stephen Muhoozi says the vehicle, a Isuzu Canta registration number UAM396V that was transporting vendors from Kiziranfumbi to Kaiso-Tonya market in Buseruka Sub County failed to brake and swerved off the road.
It hit the pavement several times before overturning, Muhoozi adds.
The deceased are all residents of Kiziranfumbi Sub County.
Some of them were identified as Medard Tumwine, Julius Asaba, Esther Acuinyi, Firidah Kyosaba, Christine Kyotamanyire, Joyce Kaboma, Evelyn Kabaganda and one minor.
The injured persons are receiving treatment at Hoima hospital’s Accident and Emergency Ward.
The driver is among those admitted.
Muhoozi blames the accident on reckless driving.
By press time, relatives were gathered at Hoima police mortuary to claim the bodies.
Police says the vehicle was damaged beyond repair.
The wreckage is still at the scene.
In 2012 more than 20 vendors moving to the same Kaiso-Tonya market were injured after an accident on the same road.
The Kaiso-Tonya road connects to the oil rich Kaiso-Tonya area in Buseruka Sub County.
The 92kilometer road which was recently upgraded to tarmac has now become a deathtrap for speeding motorists.
