At least one person is reported dead following clashes between police and FDC supporters in Kampala on Monday.
Kampala Metropolitan Police, Spokesperson Onyango, confirmed the development while speaking on NBS TV following the teargasing of Kizza Besigye supporters and his subsequent arrest.
“We didn’t use excessive force but we use a reasonable force. We couldn’t use our bare hands to stop them,” Onyango said.
He said after Dr Besigye defied orders, police used teargas which is internationally recognized and recommended.
Onyango said the FDC camp refused to provide police with information on their route plans.
“During nominations, we agreed with candidates on routes but this time, Dr Besigye didn’t listen.”
Onyango said he has not seen candidate Museveni using Kampala Road with a procession, unlike what Besigye wanted.
He maintained Besigye was first taken to Central Police Station, then Kira Police Station and was never arrested or detained.
Meanwhile, Onyango said one person was killed during clashes between military police and FDC supporters.
Scores were also injured in the scuffle.
